 ANGUS
MCDUFF, my golden Labrador Retriever/Gordon Setter, who the
wife and I proudly adopted from the "Buddy
Dog" animal shelter in Sudbury, Ma. must be feeling something in
the air because he's nuzzling a little closer to me and has that look in his eye
that is telling me to get going. That "get going" look happens every time Angus
wants me to start the spring and fall check-ups to
BE sure the house is secure.
See, when Angus first
came to us, he was just a bit of a mite but he soon surprised us by growing into
a 100 lb. plus dog who is as gentle as a lamb with the kids but gets a whole-lot
cranky when it comes to anyone coming near or in the house who doesn't belong.
So, one cold January night about one o'clock in the morning some young fella
thought he was going to
break-in to Angus' house and help himself.
Well, Angus being Angus, he had a very different point of view about that fella
coming into his house. Fortunately, the matter was settled very quickly when
Angus arrived at the full glass back door with
hair raised, growling and barking.
It only took a matter of seconds for that fella to look at Angus and decide he
better leave.
Well, I was real proud
of Angus and greatly relieved when I saw the
fella running down the
driveway. Angus was richly praised and rewarded which caused him
to strut for a few days but his pride was certainly earned. That was about the
time that I started thinking about what I could do to make sure Angus wasn't the
only line of defense.
I did some poking around
and found out that most security people feel that
if you can deter a
burglar in the first minute, by making it difficult for them to
enter your home,
they will probably go away. A very
good incentive for me to help Angus protect our home. I decided to change the
ordinary locks and hardware that came with the exterior doors. Seeing that I
knew very little about door hardware I had to do some homework. The more I
looked into what kind of locks I should replace the old ones with, the more
in-depth knowledge I got about lock hardware, in the end, I chose
commercial grade locks with deadbolts
but it took a lot of time to come to that conclusion.
So
get going. Check your house.
Make sure your home is prepared.
Maybe these tips will help you a bit.
